Where has my sanity gone?

May 23rd, 2010

So right now we’re entering the crazy part of the play where all my sanity and reason goes our the door and I get overwhelmed and grumpy. Hopefully you’re not around when this happens, but my poor girls and friend Anna have been and it wasn’t pretty.

It’s one of those things I love and hate about the play.

I love creating the costumes and doing more than just being in it.

I hate the stress that can comes with creating costumes and doing more than just being in the.

I had to apologize to three people I love, because of the grumpiness. I was happy that I realized I needed to apologize in a rational amount of time, rather than ignoring my rudeness or forgetting how ugly I was to the girls.

The funny thing is, my brain was what was making it hard. With my lack of sleep and trying to do so much, I blew things out of proportion and in the end everything was fine and dandy.

Jon says I’m doing too much, but then I think of how much other people are doing, and I’m really just trying to lift that burden. The craziness also only last for a little while, until I realize things aren’t as bad as I thought, or I get my reasoning back.

Anyways, costumes are getting on their way, rehearsals are becoming more frequent and I’ve realized I have to actually sing my little solo. I was hoping I might be able to just speak it since the notes are hard to hear.

Anyone have an in tune piano and want to plunk out my solo? I have a feeling it might be the next thing to drive me insane.

Happy Birthday to Me….a little early.

May 16th, 2010

So a while ago I started making smoothies. I was attempting to make the kind you buy at Jamba Juice, or a smoothie place, and I was pretty dang good at it. I wasn’t making any specific flavor, just something to enjoy that had fruit in it and was sweet and tasty. Then I came across some info on green smoothies and I attempted to make one of those. It didn’t go so well. The taste was fine, but the texture, ugh, gag me. I made a green smoothie in Sam’s Vitamix and was sold that that was the blender I needed if I ever was going to do the green smoothie thing. So my green smoothie making died, but my fruit smoothie making lived on.

Then my blender started making weird noises, and I decided I needed a new one and it had to be a Vitamix.

Truthfully, we did a little research on other blenders that were cheaper, still costly, but only 1/4 the cost of the Vitamix. Since I only wanted the Vitamix to make smoothies, Jon wasn’t too hot on spending a small fortune, partially because he wasn’t sure I would use it for a long time, and the smoothie making would probably die out, like my Wii work-outs. (In my defense I am healthier overall, so even though I’m not working out I’m doing other things, and the fact that I’m not in shape for the Waltz is also because no one is in shape to do the Waltz except those who do it regularly.)

Wait, where was I? Oh yes, blenders.

We read some reviews on different blenders, but they were all mixed and the one we wanted to buy actually got some bad consumer reviews and we would have to go to an actual department store, not just Target, to buy it. So a part of it was laziness. Then I told Jon we could grind wheat with the Vitamix, though it needed a different blade and container, which would cost extra, but we could also make our own peanut butter and my smoothies would be so much better, and made in much less time. Plus. it had a tamper, which is specifically made to push food into the blades, and I wouldn’t accidentally slice any of our spatulas while making my smoothies and being too impatient to wait for the blades to stop spinning before stirring the smoothie contents.

Eventually he was sold on the Vitamix, mostly for the wheat thing and consumer happiness, and we decided we’d get one, but they’re expensive and not something we wanted to be too hasty about.

Then I heard they sold them at Costco at different times throughout the year, and it’s the cheapest my friends said I could buy it, and where they got theirs.

So I waited and waited to see them at Costco, but I rarely went to Costco and I worried I had missed them.

Then in April a friend said they’d be there in May, so I asked a worker what day, and they told me May 7th.

May 7th, it was about 3 weeks away, but I had a date to look forward too.

So put it on my calendar and I waited.

And waited, and then May 7th came, but it was the day before we left for Disneyland, and I had a messy house, laundry, and a long list of stuff to do. Plus showering was not on my list, so instead, I stayed home on May 7th, went to rehearsal all day on May 8th, left for Disneyland in the evening of May 8th, and did not return home till May 11th.

So May 12th was the fateful day for me to buy my Vitamix.

I went and ate/drank some of the recipes the gentleman, Vitamix seller had prepared at his little stand at Costco. A few of us had a small conversation about the machine, all the while the seller was talking through his microphone headset, and then I picked out a nice, black Vitamix and a dry mix blade/ container. I also bought a huge bag of spinach to make green smoothies.

I opened it up once at home, five hours later since I had gone grocery shopping, rehearsal, and had two girls to get to bed. It was so pretty and nice. It’s my Birthday/ Mother’s Day present, but mostly birthday.

I’ve used it a handful of times and as I look through the recipe book I know I can easily integrate it into my life more than I had planned as long as I’m conscious of what I’m cooking and actually cook. It sits on my counter so I can easily access it and use it for mixing, cutting, and making things. It doesn’t go in the dishwasher, and cleans easily, so I can use it over and over in one day.

Tonight, I made some Minestrone Soup, in the Vitamix because it heats it up food, not to boiling, but hot enough to cook when left on long enough. It was delicious and had a fresh taste to it, not like any other soup I’ve had. Then for dessert I made Strawberry Lime Sorbet. It was sweet and tangy and it’s consistency was close to what I make my smoothies, but most homemade ice cream/ sorbet is very soft unless frozen after it’s made. (Funny note: They do a demonstration on how you can flip the ice cream or sorbet upside down once it’s made and the four hills appear, so Lilah took it to Jon, who was in the living room, while I rinsed the lid off, and flipped it upside down so he could see it was frozen too. I’m so happy it didn’t slide out of the container because it was melting and would have two minutes later and then I would have had Strawberry Lime Sorbet all over my rug. )

Tomorrow, I think I will use it to make some pancakes and whatever else floats my boat.

So I’m in love with my Vitamix. It really is a wonderful machine, costly, but so worth it.

Also if you’d like to make tasty fruit smoothies here’s what I do in no particular amount or order, but these are my smoothie making rules:

Use Frozen fruit. You can buy fresh fruit and then freeze, or just buy frozen. This is important for the consistency and then you don’t have to add ice. I usually use strawberries, mangos, blueberries, pineapple, or whatever I want. Banana’s being the one exception to the frozen rule, unless you want a very banana smoothie, then I would freeze them.

Use sorbet to sweeten, but it’s not necessary if you have pineapple juice.

Use Orange juice or pineapple juice for your liquid. Orange juice does not sweeten, but pineapple juice does. If you want the flavor of the fruit or if you have sorbet to add, use orange juice. If you don’t have sorbet, use pineapple juice to sweeten, but if you don’t want it to taste to much like pineapple, use both orange juice and pineapple.

So basically throw in your fruit, a little sorbet, and your liquid. I know pineapple and banana’s sweeten, so I don’t need to sweeten as much with the juice or sorbet when I add those. Go easy on the liquid, you can always add more, and I usually do, and blend till smooth. Since I don’t use ice, but frozen fruit, I find that most blenders can make it a smooth consistency like what you get at smoothie store. My old blender is still working after many smoothie making afternoons, I think it just can be temper-mental, so I will be donating it to DI.

Exhausted

May 15th, 2010

They had been rehearsing for 3 1/2 hours with just a few breaks in between. The breaks never seemed to help. As soon as she took the first step with her bended knee, her legs felt like jelly. She tried not to keep count by mouthing the numbers, instead she counted 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or whatever that particular dance sequence entitled, in her mind, slipping up just a few times when she got off beat. She tried so hard to push her body. So many times her feet were not following what she wanted needed them to do. Luckily, her partner was pretty good at pushing her around, as she sometimes lagged behind.

This was the hardest and longest dance they’ve rehearsed for any of the foundations plays. That’s what the choreographers had told her, and she, she was out of shape. They were getting help from a professional ballroom dancer and she was pushing them to their limits.

Dancing wasn’t the problem as much as traveling. With the holds she took small steps as she bended her knees to get the proper up and down movement of the waltz. Traveling, now traveling was hard. She had to take large steps as she bounced up and down and bended her knees with each step. Her legs wanted to buckle and give up, but she pushed her body and continued to dance. She was so relieved to hear they were finished for the day. The rehearsal had gone long, but they all needed the practice and it paid off as they got better with each run through. It felt great to hit the lifts and spins, though they still missed a few.

Four hours. Four hours of dancing and now her feet and legs beg to be rubbed and to never do it again.

But she will, and she will love the pay-off of having a spectacular show in just 5 short weeks.

Weekend of Firsts

May 12th, 2010

So this weekend we did something we’ve yet to do as a family.

We went to Disneyland!

And we had lots of fun, so much that Jon is considering going back, in 3-4 years rather than…… never.

We also went to the beach and the girls saw the ocean for the first time! They also played in it because it was a nice windy day with a high of 70 and freezing water. I did not go in, except my feet a couple times, so thankfully Jon went in with them and they had lots of fun until the tide started coming in.

I also did not go to church on Mother’s Day. I’m a little bummed about it, but only because Eden has yet to sing me my Mother’s Day song, Lilah has sung to me many times.

I just wanted to let you know what we were up to this weekend. I’ll have to upload the pictures and do a full post later.

Just know it was lots of fun. Carolyn spent 99% of her money on food, the girls only bought candy as souvenirs, and Jon has a nice Tinkerbell mug for work.

The Great Spanking Debate!

May 3rd, 2010

So I spank my girls.

I don’t spank them, but I spank them. Like I say, “Spank, spank!” as I pat their bottoms. Sometimes I pinch and grab them too. I’ve realized I do this because their bum is their final body part that continues to remind me of them as a baby. Sure it’s not nearly as chubby, but it’s the only thing that remotely has any chub on it, since they’re getting so big.

Recently Lilah seemed to become embarrassed when I spanked her. It would be just us, as in the four people of our family, and she’d be all “Hey you spanked me in front of everyone. Don’t do that.” Sure it was in a slightly whiny joking voice, but it seemed to have a ring of “Please stop spanking me, I’m getting to big for it.” So I told Lilah I would stop spanking her if she stopped spanking me. Believe me, the spanking is not one sided. There have been many times when I’m in making sandwiches or cooking in the kitchen and a little girl decides to start spanking me, sometimes two little girls at the same time. Sometimes, I was grateful I was using a sharp knife so I could tell them to stop.

So I stopped spanking Lilah as long as she not spank me, and if either of us slip, the other gets to spank us back.

Jon thought this was genius. He told me how he thought Lilah was growing up and becoming aware of her body and that’s why she wanted her bum left alone. But he thought the part that was genius was my deal that if she spanked me I get to spank her, so she controls the play spanking, and then can allow herself to be a part of the more child like play if she wants.

Really, I just didn’t want to be spanked anymore, and if I didn’t get to spank her, she didn’t get to spank me.

I thought it was the only fair way to end the great spanking debate.

Cinderella

May 1st, 2010

Yay! Tickets go on sale Monday. I am so excited and nervous. I wrote this to my two homeschool groups and am just too tired to think of anything exciting. I might also be mass mailing this to a few of you. Sorry if you get sick of me promoting it. Just let me know once you purchase tickets and then I’ll leave you alone. ๐Ÿ˜‰

~

Some of you know that Lilah, Eden and I are in a production of Rodgers and Hammerstien’s Cinderella. It’s an annual fund-raising play for the James Seastrand Foundation. Their mission is to assist the frail and elderly by providing services which foster independence and enables them to remain in their homes rather then be institutionalized. (Lilah and I were in The Wizard of Oz last year.)

We’ll be performing at the Summerlin Library Performing Arts center on June16-19 and 21-26 at 7:00 pm. We will also have a matinee on Saturday, June 19th at 2:00 pm.

Rates are: $8 for children, $10 for seniors, $15 for adults.

We have a group rate of $8 per seat for ten or more seats purchased for a single performance. So if you want to get the group rate one person needs to purchase the seats, and it will have to be for the same night. Group rates do no apply for the Friday and Saturday shows. Usually young children, age 3 and younger, who will sit on a lap, are free. I will check on that and if is is any different, I’ll let you know.

You can purchase tickets at www.LVfamilyTheater.org or call 702-649-7853 starting Monday, May 3rd.
If you go now, you can purchase them early at https://www.jadeusa.net/~jshhnlv/play/ since you’re friends. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I really love our director and we’re working really hard to put on a high quality production. We are all volunteering our time and a little money to help with the production. The only thing that can make it a success is having people come out and support us and watch it. So please come if you can. I think it’s a wonderful foundation and a wonderful opportunity for my girls and me.

I’m involved in making costumes, so if I seem sparse, it’s because I’ve lost my sanity and am up to my elbows in sewing.

Thanks.

Lacey Blake

What’s up?

April 27th, 2010

Not much.

Really? You haven’t been extremely busy and not at your house a lot.

Well, I have been busy but it just seems like a blur. Like we’re living life, but I haven’t got the foggiest clue what we’ve done.

I think Jon’s car was in the shop last week. Yes, yes it was, and luckily it only cost around $250 and not the annual $900 or more. We took it in Monday and got it back Tuesday afternoon. Since life was so crazy we went to China-A-Go-Go Monday night, to celebrate the new position, and to have dinner and left overs for other nights of the week. It worked out that we ate them Tuesday after Eden’s dance class. She doesn’t want to do this last session for some reason, and having me go watch her is what she now wants. Wow, how her attitude has changed. She likes class, for the most part, and she wants me to go watch her.

Wednesday is a total blur. I’m pretty sure I went to Trader Joe’s sometime last week, but I’m not sure and it would have been Wednesday if any day.

Thursday was Earth Day so we went to UNLV for some events, but it got rained out. We then went to the Barrick Museum for some Bring Your Child to Work Day activities, but all the elementary kids were there since the rain was to heavy to be outside for the Earth Day activities. It was pretty crazy, but eventually the girls got to paint a picture and have some fun. Then more errands and back home.

Friday we went to the park with the homeschooling co-op. We’d been doing things all week, but the girls hadn’t really gotten to be outside and see any friends. I think I also thought it would be nice to go hang out with some of the other moms. We had a wonderful afternoon at the park and my sister Carolyn stopped by since it was so close to her work.

Saturday was rehearsal. I actually took Eden with me so Jon could go on his date with Lilah. She wanted to go to the Springs Preserve, and the earlier the better since it’s getting warm, for the most part. Eden was so well behaved and just sat quietly and watched us dance, or did her own thing. I completely forgot about her at times and everyone was so impressed with her.

Sunday was church and Family Home Evening with my family.
Monday we saw Oceans with the co-op and fed the homeless with Carolyn and her work.

Now I’m going to be neglecting the girls so I can start sewing for the play.

So I guess we are pretty busy in the Blake house. I hope to remember to do fun things with the girls so they don’t go completely stir crazy.

So what have you been up to?

Adventures in LA

April 21st, 2010

I’ve only been to California a handful of times. Most were for band or choir trips to Disneyland or Knottsberry Farm. My last trip was to San Diego with Jon when I was pregnant with Lilah. So it was 7 years ago. We didn’t have a lot of money, but we decided to do a weekend trip where we enjoyed a session at the San Diego Temple and shopping at some famous outdoor shops. We mostly window shopped but we did buy a few things, a shirt, necklace and a sea shell. It was our last vacation before we would be tied down with a child, and our last hurrah as a couple. With the San Diego trip we visited Mission beach. It was my first time to a beach, and since it was March, I dipped my toes in the cold ocean for the first time when I was 19, and only because Jon made me. I really don’t like natural bodies of water, I’m just not a fan, and I really just wanted to see the ocean.

Now my weekend.

This past weekend Anna and I decided to take a trip to the LA Fashion District so we could buy fabric for the play. It’s debatable whether we really saved money going, after you factor in gas and hotel, but the selection of fabric there is much larger than Vegas, so we were able to get some fabrics there that we could not have found here, and since they’re for the ball gowns, it was totally worth it.

We got into LA around 11 pm on Friday night after taking just one detour. I really do not like driving California’s freeways. They’re so different from Las Vegas and foreign, luckily Anna’s iPhone navigated us and put us back on track. Anna’s father had gotten us a nice hotel room at The Westin, down in LA’s business district. It was really nice, and we got to ride in one of the two elevators used in the filming of True Lies. We had a mostly quiet night and then woke up at 8 am to get up and ready for the day. We ate breakfast, figured out how much fabric we would need for the the cast and then hit the Textile area of the Fashion District.

It was crazy. Some stores were very organized while others had as much fabric has they could hold with just a narrow walk way to get around. There were just rolls and rolls of fabric everywhere. We found most of what we needed at one store, then other things at a few other stores.

After two trips to the car we ate some wonderful Greek food, looked around and bought some sun glasses then made our last rounds in the textile area to buy zippers and other things we almost forgot before we packed up and headed to the beach. It was a very busy day. We had been there from 12:30 till 5:30, walking around the whole time except for the hour we took our lunch.

Since we were so close to the beach, and I had only been there once, Anna decided we had to go to the beach. Then when I told her how reluctant I was to put my feet in the water for the one and only time at 19, she decided we then had to put our feet in the water. (She was wearing shoes and at first did not want to worry about taking off her shoes.)

I wasn’t sure I wanted to go to the beach, but once I saw the coast, I was so excited to be there. It waned off I little as we tried to get in and park in this little $1 an hour parking lot that was kinda annoying. Anna and I just walked the beach, took pictures, and I called Jon and the girls to tell them I was there. Anna also took a picture of me talking to Lilah and e-mailed it to Jon so he could show the girls where mommy was.

As we walked across the sand we let the waves catch our feet. It was a little chilly in the air but the water was surprisingly not cold. I didn’t mind putting my feet in the ocean water and I look forward to taking the girls to the beach for their first time in a few weeks, and us all swimming in the ocean for the first time together. When we headed to the pier I found some sea shells and rocks that I thought the girls would enjoy and they now look forward to finding their own sea shells, I think almost as much as they look forward to going to Disneyland.

We got back on the road at 7:30 pm and headed to Vegas. Our California visit was completed with a stop at In-N-Out and the spotting of a high speed chase taking place on the Southbound Highway, as we traveled North. It was complete with a helicopter and three or four police cars following with their lights and sirens blasting.

I dropped Anna, and all the fabric, at her house around midnight, she’ll get to move it into her new house later this month, and I got home around 12:30 am, kissed my girls, and climbed into bed with Jon.

Easter Celebrations

April 18th, 2010

Like past years the girls and I had many different Easter activities. We dyed eggs with their cousins on the Wednesday night before Easter and enjoyed pizza at my moms house. I forgot my camera, so those memories will have to be in my head.

April 1 we attended Carolyn’s work Easter party. The girls dyed eggs, decorated cupcakes, colored bunny ears and hunted for eggs. We then had to check the plastic eggs for ants since Lilah remembered having ants coming out of her eggs from the previous year. This year we only found three ants. I forgot my camera once more, but borrowed Carolyn’s work camera, so I’ll get those pictures when she has time.

We then had an Easter Egg hunt on Friday with our unschooling group. The girls had lots of fun finding eggs and playing with their friends. I loved sitting and talking with the other moms, and once more forgot my camera.

This year Jon and I thought it would be fun to dye some eggs using natural dye. We treated it kinda like a science experiment and had the girls write down what colors they thought the spinach, carrots, pomegranate and blueberries would dye the eggs. They guessed the standard green, orange, red, and blue. We had done a little research, but not enough, so they turned interesting colors, but not at all what we expected. Since I found a blog that describes exactly what they did, we’ll now be prepared to use natural egg dye more successfully next year. (The spinach was basically the color I thought it would be, the carrots we used were baby, so they didn’t have their peel and did not work at all, then we should have cooked the blueberries, and pomegranates were just something we had on hand.)

The Easter Bunny brought the girls some fun stuff: movies, little notepads, and most importantly candy. I got the crazy idea to make the girls some skirts for Easter. I figured out my own pattern, basically 6 rectangles sewn together, and made them each their own tiered skirt. Since I was unable to work on them during the week as much as I would have liked, I stayed up till 3 am finishing them Easter morning. Lilah’s Easter dress didn’t fit, which I suspected would happen and why I decided to make the skirts. Lilah wore her skirt Easter Sunday and Eden wore her Easter dress. After staying up till 3 am sewing I decided my house was a mess so I tidied up a little and went to bed at 3:30 am. Luckily it was General Conference Weekend, so I only had to be up and not up and dressed for church.

The Easter Bunny hid some eggs inside the house so the girls found those and then went outside. This year we let the girls eat as much candy as they wanted on Easter Sunday, then they got to keep 7 pieces to eat later and we tossed the rest. Eden ate all her candy, but Lilah was very distracted with other things and ate very little of her candy, so I gave her till Monday night to eat all she wanted.

Sunday we had dinner at my parents house and another egg hunt with the Kemple cousins.

Lilah has declared Easter her favorite holiday and really enjoyed it all. I loved Easter but did not like all the hard boiled eggs we had since we dyed eggs three times.

I loved hiding the eggs and making it a little more difficult and I loved watching the girls grow. How they change so much in just a short year.
